There Was e There Were

Quando usar there was e there were em inglês? Qual a diferença entre there was e there were?

there is e there are é o modo como falamos “há” ou “tem” (no sentido de existir) There is e there are são usados para falar sobre coisas no presente, coisas do agora. Mas, quando a situação vira história (passado), devemos fazer uso de there was e there were.

Não há muito o que se confundir com essas coisas. tudo o que nós precisamos aprender é quando usar uma ou outra.

veja os exemplos abaixo:

·           There was a book on the table. (Tinha um livro em cima da mesa. | Havia um livro em cima da mesa.)

·    There was a boy outside. (Tinha um menino lá fora. | Havia um menino lá fora.)

·    There was a baby crying. (Tinha um bebê chorando. | Havia um bebê chorando.)

·    There were two books on the table. (Tinha dois livros em cima da mesa. | Havia dois livros em cima da mesa.)

·    There were three boys outside. (Tinha três meninos lá fora. | Havia três meninos lá fora.)

·    There were five babies crying. (Tinha cinco bebês chorando. | Havia cinco bebês chorando.)

A diferença entre there was e there were é uma só:

• there was é usado no singular  -  there were é usado no plural.

Veja os exemplos novamente e compare-os com as equivalências em português. note ainda que em todas as sentenças acima, podemos trocar o “tinha” por “havia”. Afinal, em português, nesses casos, eles são sinônimos. O legal é que em português não fazemos a mudança no singular ou plural. Ou seja, será sempre “tinha” ou “havia”. Já em inglês é preciso mudar: there was e there were. Veja mais exemplos:

• There was a pen here. (Tinha uma caneta aqui.)
• There were two guys waiting for you. (Tinha dois caras esperando por você.)
• There was  a carton of milk in the fridge. (Tinha uma caixa de leite na geladeira.)
• There were ten apples on the basket. (Tinha dez maçãs na cesta.)

Se você quiser dizer que “não tinha” ou “não havia”, basta dizer there was not (there wasn’t) ou there were not (there weren’t):

• There wasn’t a pen here. (Não tinha caneta aqui.)
• There weren’t ten apples in the basket. (Não tinha dez maçãs na cesta.)

Já para perguntas é só fazer assim: “was there…?” ou “were there…?”:

• Was there a pen here? (Tinha uma caneta aqui?)
• Were there ten apples in the basket? (Tinha dez maçãs na cesta?)

THERE TO BE — PASSADO

There was: havia — usado com substantivos no singular.
There were: havia — usado com substantivos no plural.

c. There was a woman in his office. (Havia uma mulher em seu escritório.)

d. There were six cars parked in the street. (Havia seis carros estacionados na rua)

e. There was only one table there. (Havia apenas uma mesa lá.)

f. There were five boys in the car. (Havia cinco garotos no carro.)

g. There were two me n in the living room. (Havia dois homens na sala de estar.)

h. There was a picture of her in his bedroom. (Havia uma foto dela em seu quarto.)

i.  There were three doctor s taking care of  him. (Havia três médicos cuidando dele.)

3. Agora transforme as sentenças da primeira atividade em perguntas. Lembre-se de usar: “was there...? ” ou “ were there...?”.
